What Is an Endodontist, and Why See a Root Canal Specialist?
An endodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on diagnosing tooth pain, treating problems involving the dental pulp, and saving natural teeth through root canal treatment and other endodontic procedures.
After completing dental school, endodontists receive at least two additional years of specialized training. This advanced education focuses on diagnosing complex dental problems, performing root canal treatment and retreatment, and managing challenging cases involving dental infections, cracked teeth, and dental trauma.
General dentists frequently refer patients to endodontists when a tooth requires specialized evaluation or treatment. At Covina Dental Specialists, our endodontists use advanced techniques and technology to provide individualized care, with the goal of preserving natural teeth whenever possible.
What Happens During a Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a procedure designed to save a natural tooth when the dental pulp becomes inflamed or infected. At Covina Dental Specialists, our endodontists use specialized techniques and advanced technology to diagnose and treat these conditions.
What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
Anesthesia and Isolation: Local anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable. A dental dam is placed around the tooth to isolate it and maintain a clean treatment environment.
Access and Cleaning: A small opening is made in the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. The inflamed or infected pulp tissue is removed, and the canals are carefully cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.
Root Canal Filling: Once the canals have been prepared, they are filled and sealed with biocompatible materials to help prevent reinfection.
Final Restoration: Following root canal treatment, your general dentist will typically provide the appropriate permanent restoration, such as a crown or filling, to protect the tooth and restore its function.
How Long Does a Root Canal Take?
Many root canal treatments can be completed in a single appointment. However, the number of visits depends on the tooth's anatomy, the extent of infection, and the complexity of the case. Some teeth require additional appointments to achieve the best possible treatment outcome.
Our priority is to provide thorough, individualized treatment rather than rush through a procedure.
Diagnosing Tooth Pain and Cracked Teeth
Tooth pain can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. Pain caused by an inflamed or infected tooth may be felt in nearby teeth, the jaw, or other areas of the face. Cracked teeth can also cause intermittent pain when chewing or sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
At Covina Dental Specialists, our endodontists specialize in diagnosing complex dental pain and identifying conditions that may not be apparent during a routine dental examination.
We use clinical examinations, specialized diagnostic testing, digital radiographs, and 3D CBCT imaging when clinically indicated to help identify the source of discomfort and determine the most appropriate treatment.
Our goal is to provide an accurate diagnosis, relieve dental pain when possible, and preserve natural teeth whenever appropriate.
Treats Traumatic Injuries
Pulp damage is sometimes caused by a blow to the mouth, and the endodontist specializes in treating these traumatic injuries. For example, a blow to a child's permanent tooth that is not fully developed can cause the root to stop growing. A procedure called apexification stimulates bone to be deposited at the end of the root which makes it possible to then save the tooth through a root canal procedure. An endodontist is specially trained in procedures for replanting teeth that have been knocked out of their sockets.
Will I need to return to your office for Additional Visits?
Once endodontic therapy is completed your tooth should be examined periodically, usually every 6 - 12 months. This allows us to make sure the tooth has healed or is healing properly. You will be sent a notice in the mail when we feel it is appropriate to reevaluate the area. Since an abscess may take 2 years to heal, our office will reevaluate the tooth for at least 2 years.
Retreatment
Occasionally a tooth that has undergone endodontic, treatment fails to heal or pain continues despite therapy. Although rare, sometimes a tooth initially responds to root canal therapy but becomes painful or diseased months or years later. When either of these situations occur, the tooth often can be maintained with a second endodontic treatment.
